Radiochemistry Education

The Western Nuclear Science Alliance (WNSA) radiochemistry program at Washington State University (WSU) is centered around WSU's Nuclear Radiation Center (NRC) and its one-megawatt TRIGA fueled reactor, cobalt-60 irradiation unit, and numerous state-of-the-art radiation detectors and counting systems. The WSU-WNSA focus is radiochemistry education with laboratory experience for regional college faculty and high school science teachers. This education experience includes lectures and radiochemistry laboratory experiments. The primary experimental area involves the application of neutron activation analysis (NAA) as a trace analytical technique. In addition, the NRC supports undergraduate and graduate education, with both facilities and instruction. Graduate students in engineering, physics, chemistry, geology, anthropology, food science, animal science, veterinary science and other fields may conduct their thesis research at the NRC. The wide range of services and capabilities make the WSU-NRC ideally suited to support elemental analysis or radiation-related studies at Washington State University .

Tours of the reactor facility can be arranged by calling (509) 335-7592.
